Camlin the hero for Ballyclare High in penalty shoot

Ballyclare High 0 Lurgan College 0

Ballyclare High win 3-1 penalties

Ballyclare High goalkeeper Lucy Camlin saved three penalty strokes as the home side qualified for the semi final of the Ulster Schools' Plate after a goal less game against Lurgan College.

Almost four hours of open play have failed to separate these two sides in two competitions this season, but on this occasion it was Ballyclare who prevailed in the penalty shoot out, reversing the outcome of the previous meeting between the two teams in the Schools' Cup earlier in the season.

Ballyclare had much the better of the play in this meeting, but could not apply the finishing touch; thanks largely to some resolute defensive play the visitors and several excellent go line clearances.

After eleven minutes Joanna Mills and Sarah Agnew combined in a flowing move which almost led to a goal scoring chance. The pace of the Ballyclare attackers continued to pose a significant threat and Ballyclare won a series of penalty corners form which both Vanessa Surgeoner and Amy Cooke had goal bound shots well saved.

Ballyclare continued to hold the upper hand in the second period and a well-worked penalty corner variation saw Vanessa Surgeoner force another fine save from the Lurgan goalkeeper.

The game moved into extra time and initially Ballyclare looked the more likely to break the deadlock. Both Vanessa Surgeoner and my Cooke had shots well blocked, before Lurgan earned three penalty corners in quick succession as they threatened to claim a late winner.

However, the stalemate continued and, for the second time this season, the two teams had to complete a penalty shoot out to find a winner.

Ballyclare converted three of their four strokes, while Lurgan managed only one, thanks largely to the efforts of Lucy Camlin who set the tone for the decider with a stunning save from the first Lurgan stroke.

In the semi-final Ballyclare will play Glenlola in the semi final of the Senior Plate.

Player of the match – Vanessa Surgeoner.
