A Community Youth Coaching programme is currently under way at Mossley Pavilion, giving 16 to 18-year-olds school pupils training in different sporting disciplines.
The programme consists of a weekly session, focusing on a particular sport. The remaining weeks will bring training in cricket from the Northern Cricket Union, Ulster Hockey, and Irish Football Association coaches.
The initiative - now in its fifth year - gives participants an overview of how to deliver a coaching session, while also providing an opportunity to get on the first rung of the coaching ladder. Pupils are nominated by their schools and the places are free of charge.
Dean Holmes, Newtownabbey Council’s Sport and Play Development Officer, added: “The feedback from this programme is consistently very good and there are a large number who have attended these courses in the past, who have gone on to university and higher level coaching courses which is great to see.
“Those who take part in the programme also tend to take what they have learnt back to their schools and clubs and help increase the already high standard of sport played in the area.”
