Dobbin does it again for UUJ

UUJ 2

Downshire YM 1

UUJ produced one of their worst performances of the season, where maybe their lack of competitive action since the festive period is taking its toll, and thus, with all due respects, it’s just as well that Saturday’s visitors to the Factory Grounds were lowly Downshire Young Men, who now slip into bottom slot in 1A.

Perhaps it might have turned out different had Conal McNally given UUJ an early lead, racing onto a long ball over the top, only to sky the ball over the bar.

Minutes later, McNally fired a Gary McCullough cross straight at the keeper, before making it third time lucky on 25 minutes, scrambling the ball home from close range.

Fra Miskelly’s Men doubled that lead five minutes later, with midfielder Michael Dobbin on the scoresheet for the second week in a row, thumping a left foot shot into the corner of the net.

The remainder of the half belonged to Downshire who soon clawed a goal back; the visiting forward lofting the ball over the head of keeper Alan Breen, with Davy Turtle tracking back to the line, only helping the ball on its way into the net.

Downshire could have been level just minutes later, cracking open the UUJ offside trap, only for Breen to spring to the rescue.

The ‘Poly’ must have been relieved to hear that half time whistle, but looked more like their usual selves on the turnaround, where McNally and Dan McAlea both had chances to put the game beyond the Hillsborough side.

However, the plucky visitors almost rescued a point just before the close when the Downshire man surely took the wrong option, going it alone but seeing his shot career off the post into Breen’s welcome arms – when ex UUJ striker Gerry Tabb was lurking menacingly in the middle.

Next Saturday, it’s back to the Factory Grounds for the visit of Rathfern Rangers.

UUJ; Breen – McKeown, Maxwell, Turtle, McCullough (Dunlop) – Walsh, Dobbin, J Magennis, Scollay – McNally, McAlea. Sub (unused) Brannigan.
