FOOTBALL: Newtowne prove too strong for Comrades Reserves

Ballyclare Comrades Reserves suffered their first defeat of the season when they were knocked out of the Crawford Cup at the quarter-final stage by Newtowne.

The Limavady lads from the Ballymena Intermediate Division found themselves a goal down at Dixon Park when Ryan McIlwaine chipped the keeper.

The visitors levelled from the penalty spot after 35 minutes and took the lead when a midfielder stormed into the box and fired the ball in to the top corner well beyond the reach of Ross McKnight.

The writing was on the wall for Ronnie Burns’ Wee Reds on the hour when Newtowne stretched their advantage to 3-1.

Kyle Woods struck the post as Ballyclare tried to hit back but they were caught on the break, conceding a fourth goal five minutes from time.

“We have no complaints,” said Burns, “although we were a much younger side we played hard and gave them a game, and our teenagers will surely learn from the experience.

Comrades Reserves: McKnight; Clarke, McCauley (C), Todd, Finn; Robinson, B Crowe, J McMillan, Haskins; McIlwaine, Woods. Subs: C Crowe, L Davidson, R Davidson, Gault, Burke.
