The 26-year-old enjoyed a solid campaign at Dixon Park last year and his performances were rewarded when boss Eddie Hill named him as his skipper during the summer.

“I’m looking forward to it,” said McCart. “It came as a bit of a shock. I’ve only had one full season with Ballyclare but I was captain at Glebe Rangers before and I enjoyed so it won’t be anything new to me.

“ Eddie said he thought I could do the job and I’m looking forward to the season ahead.”

Ballyclare’s Championship 1 campaign kicks off this Saturday with a tasty home clash against rivals, Larne. And the Reds will be hoping it’s the first step on a long road to bettering last season’s seventh-place finish .

“The main priority is the league this year. We want to finish as high up as we can. A good start is important,” added McCart.

“We turned Larne over three times last year. They’ll not want it to happen again. They have a bit of urgency to try and beat us ... but we’ll go into it like any other game just trying to do our best to win it.”
