Nortel see off rivals in four-team tournament

Ballynure OB continued their preparations for the forthcoming season by competing in a four-team tournament at Nortel’s grounds on Saturday afternoon.

Nortel were overall winners after beating Rathfern Rangers on penalties in the final, while Gary Burns’ lads saw off Scottish visitors, Motherwell YC, in the 3rd v 4th place play-off.

Burns said: “In our first game we went down 3-0 to Nortel, but the scoreline doesn’t tell the whole story, for we were very much in the game.

“We had plenty of the ball but we hit the woodwork three times when goals seemed on the cards.”

Reflecting on the Motherwell clash Burns said: “Goals by Dan Ellis, Robert Houston, Paul McIntyre (ex Chimney Corner) and Mark Leckey secured the hard-fought 4-3 win, and although we didn’t finish on top it was a very enjoyable afternoon.

“Much praise must go to Nortel FC officials for organising the event, and inviting Ballynure to take part,” he added.

On Saturday, Ballynure entertain Ballymena Saturday Morning League side FC Moylena at Mossley.
