The Mayor of Newtownabbey, Fraser Agnew, helped launch the 2013 Sports Awards on Monday along with former British and Irish Lions captain Willie-John McBride.
The borough’s first citizen was also joined by councillors Pat McCudden and Billy Webb, and Shane McCullough from the University of Ulster and pupils from Earlview Primary School.
The programme is in its 13th year and all involved want to make sure all the fantastic sporting achievements in the Borough get the recognition they deserve.
Again, this year the categories are: Services to Sport, Junior Team, Club of the Year, Adult Sports Person of the Year, Junior Sports Person of the Year, Sports Person of the Year With a Disability and Coach of the Year.
Organisers hope this will be the best year ever and say they are looking forward to the applications rolling in, particularly in the junior categories where the stars of the future are honoured.
The closing date for entries is January 31, 2014 with the gala dinner scheduled to be held at the Theatre at The Mill on Wednesday, April 30.
Dean Holmes, Newtownabbey Borough Council’s Sport and Play Development Officer, said: “This is a fantastic programme going from strength to strength and it really is amazing the depth of talent we have here in Newtownabbey.”
