High School win Plate game against Larne

Larne Grammar 1st XI 0 Ballyclare High 1st XI 4

THIS was Ballyclare High School 1st XI's first match in the Schools' Plate hockey competition, presented a different challenge as they were playing on the gravel against Larne Grammar.

However they adapted well to the surface and after only two minutes when Lauren Mawhinney won a penalty corner and Vanessa Surgeoner's powerful straight strike gave them an early lead.

The second goal came from another penalty corner won by Joanna Mills. This time the ball was switched right to Penny Bowen who coolly passed it back to Surgeoner and her shot was deflected into the Larne net by Sarah Agnew.

The third goal came from Clare Holmes pulling the ball inside to Surgeoner who penetrated the circle and won another penalty corner. This time the ball came out Megan Thompson who passed the ball back to Mawhinney who placed the ball skilfully past the Larne goalkeeper into the net.

A fourth goal came just before half time after great play down the right wing from Penny Brown and Sarah Agnew, and the former won yet another penalty corner. This corner went right again to Penny Brown and back into Vanessa Surgeoner, who swept it powerfully into the back of the net.

Unfortunately, in the second half Ballyclare failed to add to their total as play was bogged down as each side found it difficult to find space, both resorting to hitting long hopeful balls.

Each side did creating a few chance in the second but no one could find the finishing touches, So ballyclare High ran out 4-0 and progress to the next round of the Schools' Plate

Player of the Match - Vanessa Surgeoner.

CUP WIN FOR 2B XI

Sullivan Upper 2B XI 0

Ballyclare High 2B XI 4

Ballyclare High 2B XI travelled to play Holywood side Sullivan Upper 2B XI in the quarter finals of the Schools' 3rd XI Cup.

It was the Ballyclare girls who got off to a great scoring early in the game thanks to good work and a great strike from Megan Lamont.

After this great start the Ballyclare girls lost their way a little and the game became very scrappy with neither side creating any chances, so Ballyclare led 1-0 at the interval.

At the start of the second half Ballyclare increased their lead when Rachel Campbell fired the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the Sullivan goal.

After another period of scrappy play, Ballyclare got back in control and Tori Wallace scored a fantastic third goal. She single handedly took the ball around three of the Sullivan defenders before firing the ball into the back of the goal.

The fourth and final goal game from Jane Kennedy who hit the ball from the top of the circle and into the net. The 4-0 victory was well deserved and Ballyclare now look forward to the semi-final of the 3rd XI Cup next month.
