Jackson inspires Mossley to tournament win

MOSSLEY Hockey Club's senior squad clinched victory in Ulster's premier pre-season tournament at Cookstown Hockey Club last weekend.

Inspired by Irish international John Jackson, and fine performances from Simon Todd, Johnny McMeekin and Neal Glassey, the Glademen secured their first outright victory in the tournament, which is held annually in memory of Cookstown player Nigel Cheevers.

New head coach Harry McNeill named a strong squad for the tournament which involved three matches in as many days. He also decided to give youth its fling by including 18 year old Jordan Robinson and James Lorimer, Neal Glassey, Joel Cathcart, Phil Hammill and Iain Webber, all under 17. McNeill was also delighted to have internationals John Jackson, who has recently returned to the club, and Simon Todd in his line-up.

Mossley performed well on Friday night against hosts and Premier League champions Cookstown, and despite squandering a 2 - 0 lead were more than happy with a point, the game ending 2 - 2.

Saturday's game was against Annadale and Mossley found themselves 2 goals down after only 3 minutes. To their credit they fought back and turned a 3 - 1 deficit into a 5 - 3 victory.

Sunday found Mossley needing a win against Dublin Corinthian to win the tournament. They were 2 goals up before the visitors scored to leave the Glademen a nervous final 10 minutes, but they continued to play well and fully deserved their victory.

Scott McNeill accepted the Nigel Cheevers Memorial Trophy on behalf of his team, thanking the organisers and opponents and also praising his own team-mates on three exciting

performances.
