Local fighters take Five Nations titles

TWO kickboxers from the Bodyshots Gym were part of the successful Northern Ireland team which competed at the Five Nations Tournament in Birmingham recently.

Fourteen-year-old Glenn McFarlane from Glengormley and 20-year-old David Welsh from Abbots Cross both fought their way to Five Nations titles - a new achievement for the local kickboxing club, which is based at the Valley Leisure Centre.

Glenn, winner of this year's Ulster Provincial and the All-Ireland Junior Championships, secured the Five Nations Light Contact title, while David, also crowned an All-Ireland Champion back in March, won the Five Nations Full Contact belt.

Stephen McFarlane, one of the club's international referees, also travelled with the NI team to Birmingham.

Meanwhile, Glenn and David, along with four other fighters from the Bodyshots club, will be part of the Northern Ireland team which will travel to Spain in October for this year's World Championships.
