Emma strikes gold in the All-Ireland 1,500m final

Promising young athlete Emma Hutchinson won gold in the junior 1,500 metres at the Aviva Irish Schools Track and Field Championships in Tullamore on Saturday (May 31).

Emma, a pupil at Ballyclare High School, secured her place at the All-Irelands after she won the Ulster Schools’ Championship junior girls’ 1,500m race in 05:01.

On Saturday, despite very hot weather and tough opposition, she ran a superb race. From the bell for the last lap, it could only be described as a fierce, tight battle with most of the field still in contention, but with around 100 metres to go, Emma dug deep and kicked for home.

In an exciting finish she managed to hold off the opposition from Niclola Duffy (St Peter’s, Dunboyne) to win the in a time of 04:57.

It secured her a much-coveted gold medal and took four seconds of her previous race time.

Meanwhile, Ballyclare High’s Year 9 athletics Team have won through to the Ulster Finals at the Antrim Forum.

They progressed as winners of both their area competition their district competition.
