POOL: Ballyclare trio to represent Northern Ireland

Three Newtowbabbey-based pool players from the Ballyclare and District League will be representing Northern Ireland in this year's Nations Cup.

Iain Britton, Johnny MacKay and Gareth Fears have been selected for the tournament, which will be staged later this year in Coleraine.

The event, which features teams from Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales, will take place from Thursday, October 20 until Sunday, October 23.

The tournament is played in a round robin format, with the competitors playing three sessions of 11 matches. The teams are made up of 11 players from squads of 14, with players being able to be subbed.

Commenting on the news of the call-ups, Ballyclare Seniors League champion, John Barrons said: “Iain has been playing for Northern Ireland since the 1990s and will bring experience to the set-up. Johnny is more noted for his golfing exploits, but has recently been playing on the Pro Am pool tour in England. This year will be Gareth’s debut.

“Iain and Gareth play for the Hasbeens who won the Ballyclare League this year, so the call-up will add to their successful campaign. Johnny plays for McConnell’s of Doagh, who won the league three seasons previously under Jeff Moore.”
