St Malachy’s runner Joe McAllister topped the field at Friday night’s Mallusk Hariers Five-Mile Road Race.

The experienced McAllister battled it out with Brian Campbell for top spot. The pair were among 208 competitors, representing 32 clubs, who put their best foot forward at the Wilsons Auctions sponsored event.

Last year’s winner, Campbell (Willowfield Harriers), who has been in sparkling form, notching up numerous wins throughout the season, went head-to-head with McAllister over the first 4.75 miles until McAllister edged in front.

The St Malachy’s man kicked on in the final quarter of a mile to claim the honours by six seconds in a time of 26:37. The front two both beat last year’s winning time of 27:00 minutes.

Campbell’s Willowfield team-mate, Neill Weir, took third in an impressive time of 27:38. Fourth spot went to Andrew Considine (North Belfast) who clocked 28:19. He was followed home by his North Belfast team-mate and first junior, Conal McCambridge 28:31.

The ladies’ race was equally as competitive.

It was won by Newtownabbey’s Geraldine Branagh in a brilliant time of 33:57 minutes, followed in second by Dublin’s Yvonne MacAuley (Crusaders AC) 34:16. Sarah Jane Guiney (Albertville Harriers) was third in a time of 34:44.
