Inspired by Olympic gold medal winner Jessica Ennis, Newtownabbey girl Emma Hutchinson won the Northern Ireland Under-13 Pentathlon Championship at the Antrim Forum recently.
The multi-discipline event consisted of 75m hurdles, shot put, long jump, high jump and Emma’s favoured 800m.
The 12-year-old went into the final event, the 800m, in second place on the points table. At this stage only 176 points separated first to fourth, so the gold was up for grabs.
To claim gold the Ballyclare High School pupil knew she not only had to win the race but also see off her rivals by at least six seconds - a tall order in the middle-distance race.
But she delivered the goods, taking the lead from the start and crossed the line an incredible 14 seconds ahead of the runner-up.
