Mossley celebrate scoring a goal in the 2-2 draw with Newcastle

Having been postponed twice due to snow, Mossley Ladies 1st XI finally made it to Newcastle to play their final game of the season at the weekend.

A win would have put the Glade girls in a play-off position, but a 2-2 draw meant they have to be content with third spot in Senior 4.

The early threat came from centre-midfielder Laura McCowan who penetrated the Newcastle defence, but her efforts came to nothing with several balls going wide of the net.

Newcastle were quick on the break, but despite conceding a few short corners, Mossley kept the score level at 0-0 at half time.

The second session began with the Glade girls pushing for an opener and a superb cross from right to left found Carla McCoubrey at the back post and she slotted it home.

With the deadlock broken, great runs from Anna Glassey and Amye Wallace put the Newcastle defence under pressure. Kathryn Lorimer fired narrowly wide before Newcastle hit back to score from a short corner.

However, visitors regained the lead when Rachel Lynas wasted no time in beating the ‘keeper with only 10 minutes of the game left to play.

Newcastle upped the pressure and the Mossley girls watched their play-off hopes slip away as the home side drew level with a scrappy finish from a short corner.

The team would like to thank all the supporters who have turned up week in, week out, in all weathers, to cheer on the side this season.
