The 4 Nations Under-21 international hockey tournament in Newtownabbey ended in a somewhat unusual and unexpected manner a day later than planned at Mossley Hockey Club.

Because of the unpredictable weather, the final game between England and Germany was rescheduled for early Friday morning - the day after the tournament was expected to finish.

But due to the frost, the game was postponed with the result being determined on a penalty shoot-out.

Predictably, the Germans came out on top (4-2) and finished the competition undefeated.

The trophy was presented to German captain John Fredrik Hillmann by Daphne Hall, president of the Irish Hockey Association.

The Irish team finished joint-second in the event which was the first of its kind for Newtownabbey and the province.

Organisers would like to thank Sport NI for funding the event through the international sports event programme, and all involved hope it’s the start of many more events of this kind coming to Newtownabbey.
