Newtownabbey’s newest running club, Mallusk Harriers, is going from strength to strength.

From humble beginnings just a couple of years ago, it now boasts over 40 members, operates a senior and junior section, and has been represented in races and events all over the UK and Ireland.

Club chairman Noel Bloomfield explained: “While we are keen to have our members represent the club and, indeed, the area, that is not the be all and end all. We are a community-based club and are keen to encourage new members regardless of ability. In essence, we hope to help people who join the club be the best that they can.”

The club currently has three qualified coaches and trains three days a week, meeting at the Academy Club in Mallusk.

Mr. Bloomfield added: “We are delighted with how far we have come in such a short time but we are not resting on our laurels. In April we will be launching ‘Run Mallusk’ - a Couch to 5k programme.

“Also, we are looking forward to hosting our second Mallusk Harriers ‘5 mile’ Road Race. Last year’s inaugural event brought people from throughout Northern Ireland to Mallusk to see our beautiful countryside. Furthermore, we have runners representing Mallusk in the London Marathon for the first time.”
