NEWTOWNABBEY athlete Michael McKillop has been named in the Irish team for this summer’s London 2012 Paralympic Games.
McKillop, who is from Glengormley, is one of Ireland’s most successful paralympians. He is the reigning 800m paralympic champion and double world champion and world record holder over 800m and 1500m.
Part of a 49-strong team - the largest Irish Paralympic team since Atlanta 1996 - McKillop will be aiming for gold in both the 800m and 1500m.
As an 18-year-old at the Beijing games in 2008, McKillop, who has a mild form of Cerebral Palsy, smashed his own T37 800m record, crossing the line in 1:59.39.
