Mossley Hockey Club welcomed the best young hockey talent on offer in Ireland to Newtownabbey at the weekend for the annual U16 and U18 Boys’ Interprovincial tournament.
Teams from Leinster, Munster and Ulster took part in the tournament with all players looking to make an impression in front of Irish selectors, including the national men’s coach Andrew Meredith.
The large travelling and home support was treated to a fantastic display of hockey across the three-day tournament.
Among the local athletes representing Ulster in the U18 tournament were Mossley players Ross McIvor and Nathan Douglas.
Both impressed over the weekend and were strongly involved in securing a second-place finish in the competition, including a 3-1 victory over the eventual winners Leinster. The Ulster U18 side was also coached and managed by the Mossley duo of Fergie Cosgrove and Trevor Lorimer and although disappointed not to secure the title, the pair were very impressed by the overall performance of the squad.
In the U16 tournament Ulster secured the title decisively with four comprehensive victories.
Mossley Hockey Club would like to take the opportunity to thank Ulster and Irish Hockey, the traveling teams including management, umpires and supporters, Newtownabbey Borough Council and to all volunteers who played their part in delivering a successful tournament. The club looks forward to hosting further tournaments in the near future.
