The highly-anticipated Under-21 Men’s Hockey International 4 Nations tournament got under way at Mossley Hockey Club on Tuesday evening.

Irish coach Jonny Caren has selected a strong 18-man squad for the tournament where they will compete against Scotland, England and the U21 World Champions, Germany.

There are 11 Ulster players on the panel, including Mossley duo Ben McMillan and Neal Glassey (below). Goalkeeper McMillan performed well as Ulster won the Under-21 Interpros at the weekend, while Glassey was vice-captain in Dublin and got his name on the scoresheet in their last fixture against Ireland U18s.

Commenting on his selection, Caren said: “The talent on show at the weekend confirms Irish Hockey has a fantastic future ahead.”

The event, which has been funded by both Sport Northern Ireland and Newtownabbey Borough Council, got under way on Tuesday evening with Ireland defeating Scotland 5-1. England’s game with Germany was postponed because of the poor weather conditions.

On Wednesday Germans lock horns with the Scots (5 pm), while Ireland take on England (7 pm). Thursday sees England v. Scotland (5 pm) and Ireland against Germany (7 pm).
