Jonny McMullan is the Avon National Formula Ford Champion after the Newtownabbey driver delivered a brilliant performance in a series double-header at Anglesey.
McMullan clinched the title with his second major success of the season and driving the Motorsport Ireland Van Diemen, he set pole position for both races, bagged a brace of victories and twice recorded the fastest lap.
McMullan is the first driver from Northern Ireland to be awarded the Motorsport Ireland drive and he has repaid in full those who had the confidence to put him in the car.
“I had great pace all weekend and I am delighted to have won the Avon National Formula Ford Championship,” he said.
One week earlier at the Leinster Trophy meeting at Mondello Park he clinched the All Ireland Formula Ford Championship and his next target is next Saturday at Kirkistown at the Ards & North Down Borough Council supported Martin Donnelly Trophy meeting.
The Martin Donnelly Trophy is the most coveted award in Northern Ireland motor racing and McMullan has finished runner-up on no less than three occasions.
“This time I want to win,” he said.
“I have had little racing at my home circuit this season and to add the Martin Donnelly Trophy would be perfect.”
However, he will face stiff competition with more than 20 drivers set to compete, headed by ex-footballer Noel Robinson who has won the feature race on two previous occasions.
Also in the line-up is last year’s winner Alan Davidson and the recently crowned Northern Ireland Formula Ford Champion, Jake Byrne.
