PARKVIEW Ladies’ hopes of gaining promotion to Senior League Section 2 vanished when they lost out in the play-off.
Kilkeel, who had finished one from bottom in Section 2, were the opponents at Ferris Playing Fields in Dromore, where the County Down girls were comprehensive 3-0 winners.
Clare Dundee’s girls travelled without regulars Emma Stubbs, Angela Halaseh and Lynne Stephens, and generally had to play second fiddle to a team intent on retaining their Section 2 status.
Quick passing led to the first goal from open play, but this reverse spurred the Doagh girls to greater efforts, with midfielders Suzi Weir and Laura Neish pushing forward to support strikers Nikki Turkington and Claire Patterson.
In one attack Lauren Crowe threaded the ball through to Turkington who was denied by a fine save at the base of the post, and later the Kilkeel keeper foiled Patterson when an equaliser seemed on the cards.
However the Kilkeel girls were mainly in the ascendency and Parkview hopes dipped when the lead was doubled with a back post tap in.
In the second half Parkview forced three penalty corners, but the routine involving Neish, Patterson and Weir failed to prevent the whitewash, and near the end Kilkeel added their third goal.
“The 3-0 result was a fair reflection of play,” conceded Clare Dundee. “Their passing was that little bit sharper, and we were generally chasing the game. However it has been a successful season for Parkview Ladies Hockey Club; we finished runners-up in Senior 3, while our 2nd XI had a mid-table finish in Junior 6.
“The hockey gear will be packed away for a few months, but we will all be looking forward to resuming training in August to prepare for the new season.”
