Saints prove too strong for Parkview

A Cathy Morrison strike was all that Parkview Ladies had to offer in Saturday’s Senior Three 4-1 home defeat to Saintfield.

The hosts started promisingly, intent on playing the game mainly in opponents’ territory, and captain Claire Patterson initiated a couple of attacking moves that failed to create openings for Toni Smallwood and Jenna Maxwell.

The visitors had two forceful wingers who kept the home defence on their toes, and in one attack they opened the scoring with a rebound strike after Jenny Wallace, who was deputising for Sharon Gaffney, had blocked the initial shot.

Cathy Morrison restored parity with a firm strike after Jenny Morrison and Patterson had worked the ball in to the circle. But just before the break Saintfield regained the lead from open play.

The Saints carried the momentum into the second half with the Doagh girls restricted to sporadic forays upfield, but they did force one penalty corner from which Clare McClean saw her shot cleared off the line.

Hopes of salvaging a point disappeared when Saintfield registered twice in the closing stages. The defeat leaves Parkview in the relegation zone along with PSNI Ladies.

“After drawing in Saintfield earlier in the season we might have been expected to beat them at home,” said Clare McClean, “But since then we have lost several players, and have been unable to field the same team in consecutive matches.”
