Ophir get off to a winning start against local rivals Carrick

OPHIR RFC Second XV got their 2007/08 Minor League campaign off to a winning start with a hard-fought 13-7 win over local rivals Carrick Thirds at Woodlawn on Saturday.

A try from captain Robert Press and a conversion and penalty from centre Willy Cully gave Ophir a deserved lead early in the first half, but the home side hit back before the break with a converted score to narrow the deficit to 10-7.

An evenly contested second 40 minutes saw several good chances for both sides, but it was Ophir who took the points when a late Cully penalty sealed the win.

Ophir Seconds face another tough away fixture this Saturday against Ballymena Fifths.

Meanwhile, Ophir First XV will start their Qualifying League season this weekend with a trip to Letterkenny.
