Ophir outplay UUC

Last Saturday, Ophir Second XV met the University of Ulster, Coleraine Second XV at the Cottonmount, Mallusk, in the Guinness Minor League. Weather conditions were ideal for open running rugby.

Ophir started well and continued in the same vein. Within the first ten minutes, tries from Simon Bartholomew, Paul McGreevy and Darren Caughey, with a conversion from Willie Cully saw the home team take a 17 point lead. And by half time, Ophir had doubled the score with Simon Batholomew completing a hat trick and Connor Higgins getting in on the scoring act.

The unfortunate UUC team had by this time lost two players due to injury. They therefore sought permission from the referee to play the remainder of the game as a friendly, with the points going to the home team. This was arranged and Ophir substitutes joined UUC to reinforce their ranks and make the match a little more competitive.

However, Ophir still dominated and ran up some 90 points before the final whistle. A fine win for Ophir but all credit to a determined UUC team for sticking to the task.

Next Saturday Ophir Firsts are back in action at the Cottonmount in a friendly against Grosvenor; the Seconds are away to Armoy in the Guinness Minor League.
