Ophir battle to victory

Ophir 1st XV 12 Monaghan 1st XV 0

OPHIR met Monaghan at the Valley playing fields in Section 3 of the Kukri Qualifying League on Saturday.

After a late kick off, Ophir found themselves under serious pressure from a dominant Monaghan pack and rarely managed to claw their way out of their own territory for the first half hour.

But when they did, the Ophir backs were like scavenging wolves striving for every loose ball and with the forwards' support, setting up plenty of possession. This led to an offside infringement by Monaghan and Ophir full back Duncan Elder broke the deadlock with an excellent penalty conversion.

The scoreboard remained static until mid way through the second half when Elder again struck with another penalty. With 15 minutes to go Ophir at last started to gain the upper hand in possession and tremendous running from the backs almost got them over the line on two occasions.

But at least the home team gained some reward when Duncan Elder again slotted home a very difficult penalty from all of 40 metres. And to round off a very hard fought win, Elder successfully put over his fourth penalty of the day. The final score was Ophir 12, Monaghan, 0.
