Ophir slump to home defeat against Carrick
A LACKLUSTRE display from Ophir Seconds saw them slump to a 13-0 defeat against Carrick Thirds in a scrappy Minor League game at the Valley Leisure Centre on Saturday.
After beating Carrick on their own patch on the opening day of the season, Ophir were hoping to make it a league double over their local rivals.
However, the home side were unable to recreate the positive, attacking style of play that secured them victory at Woodlawn back in September, and produced very few scoring chances throughout the 80 minutes.
After a dull, scoreless first 70 minutes, Carrick eventually put together a couple of useful attacks and piled the pressure on the home side late in the game.
A well taken penalty gave them the lead with eight minutes left, and a second successful kick from in front of the posts made it 6-0.
As Ophir pushed forward in numbers looking for a score of their own, Carrick's backline exposed the space out wide and ran in a late try under the posts to leave the final scoreline 13-0.
This weekend Ophir Seconds will have a home game against Ballymena Fifths in the Minor League, while the First XV will return to action after a two-week break with a McCrea Cup tie at local rivals Academy.
