Castle give it their best shot

Pool.

Pool.

If anyone thought the transfer revelations in Carrick Pool League this week would knock the heart out of the Castle Pool team, they should have been in the Whitehead GRSC last week.

Although they went down 6-8 in an epic battle, the drive and team spirit that has always been Castle’s trademark, almost carried them to victory over champions The Spartans. Castle started better and led 4-3 at the interval and then by 5-3, but Kenny English’s Spartans are champions for a reason and they took five out of the next six frames to creep over the line at 8-6. Man of the match must go to Spartan, Stephen Johnston. Ranked joint-first at the World Championships a fortnight ago, he bagged a superb hat trick.

After an 11-3 win at newcomers Jolly Beggar, The Rockers replace Greenisland at the top but only on frame difference. However, with Dee Irwin and Rab Butler added to their ranks, don’t bet against them staying there right to the end. Leaders Greenisland led MSC Trojans 6-2 but Rab Brown, who is steadily building a strong squad at the Monkstown Club, saw his lads storm back for a draw.

Hit Men & Her’s wonderful campaign continues. After reaching the final of the Knock Out Cup, they stayed in touch of the top of the table with a hard-fought 8-6 win over Hugh McMurtry’s Cowboys.

The Scorpions outclassed The Warriors 12-2 and Barbarians had a similar win over bottom team, Alpha.

In the Rangers Supporters Clubs derby match it was Andy Lindsay’s Carrick team who narrowly defeated Gordon McCormick’s Whitehead boys 8-6. Eastway had a bye this week.

Results: Scorpions 12-2 Warriors, HM&H 8-6 Cowboys, Spartans 8-6 Castle, Jolly Beggar 3-11 Rockers, Greenisland 7-7 MSC Trojans, Teddy Bears 8-6 Whitehead Trojans, Barbarians 12-2 Alpha, Eastway - Bye.
