In what will go down as arguably the biggest upset ever in the history of the Carrick and District Pool League, Monkstown’s Hit Men and Her are the new Knock Out Cup winners.

Few gave them a hope against a Rockers team which would hold its own against any top League team in Northern Ireland, but Robert Henderson’s side defied the odds to record a stunning victory at the Brown Cow Inn, Carrickfergus.

It wasn’t just the comprehensive 8-2 scoreline which was memorable, but the manner in which they achieved it. Paul Henderson set the Newtownabbey team on their way in the first frame with some precise pool, before new signing Andy McMeekin made it 2-0.

Robert Henderson produced the finish of the night to rescue victory from the jaws of defeat in the third. Sara Greenberg’s gutsy performance, follwed by another success for Paul Henderson, gave Monkstown a dream 5-0 advantage.

Rockers captain Andy Arbuthnot restored some pride when he pulled a frame back, but Robert Henderson hit them for six before the interval.

Rab Butler gave the Rockers a semblance of hope when he won the first tie of the second session but McMeekin held his nerve to clear up after Shaun McAlister landed tight on the black in frame nine.

Glenn Russell clinched title with a devastating eight-ball clearance against Arbuthnot.

Rockers didn’t do too much wrong on the night, but Hit Men and Her were clinical and asked all the questions. It is the first-ever trophy to grace Monkstown Social Club and it’s well deserved for this very dedicated group of players. The team’s win gains them automatic entry into the NIPA Champion of Champions competition in mid-2013.
