Ports in front in Junior Cowdy
THE Junior Cowdy Cup team, captained by Kieran McGreevey, got a bye into the second round where they came up against local rivals, Portadown.
The first leg of this match was played at Portadown and Kieran was hoping to win at least one of the four games.
Dominic Quinn and Brian Ward almost got the win in the very first game. They played very well but, in the end, they had to be satisfied with a half.
Eamon McAnarney and Patsy McCourt didn’t do so well, losing 4 and 2.
James Gillespie and Colm McGreevey were hit with two birdies on the first two holes. They went two down and, four hours later, they walked off the seventeenth hole still two down and the game was lost 2 and 1.
Sean and Kieran McGreevey were very cross with themselves for letting a possible win slip away. They both went out of bounds at the tenth and gifted Portadown the hole. It would prove costly in the final analysis. They got to two up at one stage but just couldn’t hold on. All square playing the final hole, they lost it and the match by one hole.
So the score after the first leg reads: Portadown 3.5 Banbridge 0.5
The advantage is certainly with Portadown but Banbridge are quite capable of winning all four games at home. It’s a big ask but it can be done.
