Postponement frustrates Ballynure

BALLYNURE Old Boys made a fruitless journey to Cookstown at the weekend, with their fixture against Cookstown Olympic having to be postponed.

"We made the long journey to Cookstown but returned home frustrated when the referee refused to allow play to commence," confirmed club President, Michael Graham.

"Vandals had scattered broken glass over various parts of the pitch, so really in the interests of safety the match official had few options, so this Ballymena Premier Intermediate League fixture will have to be rearranged."

The Reserves fared better when they whitewashed Castle Star 8-0 in a Ballymena Junior League Division 2 encounter, after turning round four up.

No doubt about the Man of the Match in this one, with John Davies the only candidate after hitting the target five times.

Kenny Reith opened the scoring with a header from a Stuart McConnell corner, and David Thompson doubled the lead when he pounced on a loose ball, after the keeper had parried the initial effort by Chris Dykes.

Davies got his name on the scorecard with a rocket into the roof of the net from well outside of the box, and then he doubled his tally after having been played through the middle by Robert McMullan.

In a one-sided second session Davies added a hat-trick, and McMullan completed the scoring when he nodded into the net from a Thompson corner.

Commenting, manager Roy McDowell said: "It was an easy three points for us, but I must give credit to the Castle Star lads who played their hearts out and showed no signs of throwing in the towel."

Ballynure OB Reserves: Clarke, Harvey, Taylor, Reith, Dykes, McConnell, Reilly, Rea, Thompson, McMullan, Davies. Sub: Dylan Barry.
