Ballyclare Rugby Club’s First XV continues its defence of the Powerade Towns’ Cup this weekend with a massive home game against Clogher Valley.
The Cloughan lads may be flying high as leaders of Qualifying 2, but they will be up against it when they go head-to-head with the All-Ireland Junior Cup finalists in the second-round tie on Saturday afternoon.
Bob Young’s men caused an upset in the Millar, McCall, Wylie Junior Cup quarter-finals when they defeated Clogher, who, at the time, were sitting on top of Kukri Qualifying 1. The White Hare men went on to reach the Junior Cup final, only to lose out to Ballynahinch II.
The club’s veteran scrum-half Colin Morrow said: “It’s probably a slightly different scenario from the last time we played Clogher. Playing one of the top sides in Qualifying 1 for a second time will be tough, but at least it’s at home. Our number one target is the league this year. If we get past them on Saturday then that’s great, but our main focus is the league.
“I’m not sure how they will approach this one because the week after they play us they are in the final of the All-Ireland Junior Cup against Skibbereen.”
He added: “I’d say Clogher will be back for revenge but their target - like ourselves - is the league, so we will just have to wait and see what type of a squad the bring down to Ballyclare.”
In last season’s Towns’ Cup, Ballyclare were joint-winners when they drew with City of Derry II, after extra-time, in the Easter Monday showpiece.
