Despite a heavy defeat by leaders Ballynahinch III under floodlights in a midweek fixture at The Cloughan, Ballyclare Rugby Club’s Seconds are targeting a third-place finish in Junior League Section 1.
In their penultimate fixture they were thrashed 55-10, but unconverted scores by James Greer and Gary Clotworthy prevented a whitewash.
Ballymena IV’s 40-25 win against Ballyclare IV earned the Braid men promotion from Junior League Section 5.
The ‘Clare scorers were Tony Turner, Ross Johnston, William Stevenson, Matt Dailly and skipper Marc Fox, but John Wasson uncharacteristically was off-target with all five conversion attempts.
Dailly, Johnston, Paul Robinson and Jordan Brownlee impressed in the pack, while Chris Gawn and Stevenson were the pick of the backs.
Ballyclare RFC have embarked on a new venture with the formation of a tag side that will cater for players who suffer from mental or physical disability.
Sponsored by Bill Blair, Vehicle Repairer, Doagh, the team, to be known as Clare Hares, will be coached by Gareth Byers, Gary Clotworthy, James Greer and Jordan McKinstry who hope to attract players from the wider East Antrim area in preparation for a Tag Rugby Tournament at Ravenhill in June.
