Templepatrick gain upper hand in cup final rehearsal
TEMPLEPATRICK came out on top in the local derby with Academy on Sunday afternoon when they coasted to a comprehensive win by six wickets.
Chris Busby and Gareth Boyd set up the win with three wickets apiece, restricting Academy to 92 in sunny but blustery conditions at The Cloughan, where the visitors used only 42 of their permitted fifty overs.
Following his top score twenty-four hours earlier, Academy's wicket-keeper/batsman Mark Shields did it again with 22, closely followed by sixteen year old Belfast Royal Academy student Vishal Sridhar with 20.
David Greenlees, who is one of Academy's big hitters, was brilliantly run out by home skipper Artie Campbell, who scored a direct hit from deep mid-on, much to the delight of his team-mates.
Chris Busby's bowling stint of ten overs included no fewer than seven maidens, while conceding a miserly four runs. Gareth Boyd was equally effective when he returned figures of 3 for 11 off 5.3 overs, while Robert Smith, James Jackson and John Busby chipped in with one wicket each.
In reply Templepatrick secured the Division 1 Section 3 points in 28.2 overs. Robert Smith coming in at number five, top scored with an unbeaten 35, while Richard Greer, who seems to have completely recovered from his potentially serious eye socket injury, contributed 21, followed by Gareth Anderson with 16.
So with the Junior Cup final looming, Templepatrick drew first blood, but Academy will be striving to reverse the result when the teams clash on 9th August.
Meanwhile, the final could now be staged at Osborne Park in Belfast instead of either Comber or Lisburn, but the venue has still to be confirmed by the NCU.
