Victory takes Ballyclare Ladies into second spot

Ballyclare Ladies 1st XI 3 Omagah Ladies 1st XI 0

BALLYCLARE Ladies shot up in to second spot in the Senior League Section 1 with a 3-0 win against Omagh at George Avenue.

The visitors had the better of exchanges in a scoreless first half, but despite having several penalty corners they failed to get the ball past Vikki Cleland who was in fine form in the home goal.

She was well protected by her defence in which Pamela McWhirter and Danielle Hagan stood out, but after the interval roles were reversed when the locals turned on the style.

Lyndsey Hyslop was always a threat with her ability to run at opponents, and one of her thrusts produced the opening goal by team captain Karen Dickson.

When Danielle Hagan's shot from a penalty corner was parried by the goalie, Lyndsey pounced on the loose ball and rattled the backboard with a crisp finish to double the lead.

Sarah Galbraith who was last season's top scorer got her name on the card when she left several defenders trailing in a thrilling solo run, before slipping the ball wide of the advancing goalie in to the net.

The team was at full strength except for young Amy Cooke who was in Dublin for trial with the Irish Under 16 squad.

Ballyclare Ladies I: V Cleland, L Ashcroft, D Hagan, D Wilson, P McWhirter, J Cooke, N Kempton, L Hyslop, S Galbraith, K Dickson (C), D Henry, G McMaw.

SECONDS

The 2nd XI travelled to Comber where the expected Junior League Section 1 relegation battle ensued with North Down II, and honours ended even on a 1-1 scoreline.

'Clare wingers Sara Moore and Rebekah Mills threatened on several occasions with darts down the flanks, while Sue Bell tested the keeper on a couple of occasions.

Sara Moore eventually deservedly gave Ballyclare the lead when she slotted home the rebound after Sue Bell's initial shot had been blocked by the goalie.

After the interval the North Down girls had more of the ball and were rewarded with a strike from open play.

Overall this was reckoned to be a fair result, with Sue Bell getting the Girl of the Game award.

Ballyclare Ladies II: T Stewart, E Johnston, G McGrath, C McGookin, K McFarland, J Wilson (C), S McCrory, R Phillips, R Mills, S Bell, R Mills.

THIRDS

The 3rd XI defeated Dungannon III 3-0 with goals by Jessica West (2) and Julie Cooke, while the 4th XI's scheduled Junior League fixture against Knock IV was postponed.

FIXTURES

This weekend's fixtures: 2nd XI v Pegasus II, away; 3rd XI v Ballymena IV, away; 4th XI v Belfast Harlequins VI, home. The seniors have no scheduled fixture but they hope to be able to fit in a rearranged game.
