West Down Zone Championship off to a flyer

THE Donaghy's West Down Zone Championships got off to a good start last week.

With a bumper record of entries and new sponsor Donaghy’s Sports Banbridge the Zone is looking forward to a great two weeks of bowling.

Competitions completed this past week:

Singles (section a) semi-final: DJ Wilson (Tullylish) beat D Dempsey (Down Shoes); K McCoy (Down Shoes) defeated D Breen (St Johns). Final: DJ Wilson beat K McCoy.

Singles (section b) semi-finals: S Black (Tullylish) beat E Campbell (Tullylish); A Johnston (Dromore NS) beat W McCullough (St Patrick’s). Final: A Johnston defeated S Black.

Singles (section c) semi-final: G Chambers (St Colman’s) beat C Dillon (St Joseph’s); C Sherman (Holm Park) beat J Martin (Magherally). Final: G Chambers beat C Sherman.

Singles (section d) semi-final: J Wilson (Tullylish) beat R Scott (Garvagh); H Dillon (St Joseph’s) beat G Crothers (Scarva Presbyterian). Final: J Wilson defeated H Dillon.

The four singles go forward to finals night where an open draw will take place on 12 March.

Triples (section a) semi-final: S Murphy (St Joseph’s) beat M Wilson (St Colman’s); A Hughes (Dunbarton) beat D Breen (St John’s). Final: A Hughes beat S Murphy.

Triples (section b) semi-final: K McCoy (Down Shoes) beat A Copeland (Annaclone Presbyterian); J Wilson (Tullylish) beat D Bowman (1st Dromara). Final: J Wilson defeated K McCoy.

Triples (section c) semi-final: M Gamble (Holm Park) beat J McKenny (Holm Park); A Leckie (Scarva Presbyterian) beat E Campbell (Tullylish). Final: A Leckie defeated M Gamble.

Triples (section d) semi-final: C Dillon (St Joseph’s) beat G Clinghan (1st Dromara); C Sherman (Holm Park) beat A Johnston (Dromore NS). Final: C Dillon beat C Sherman.

All the winners are through to play off night on Friday 5 March in Banbridge Pavilion. A Hughes plays J Wilson while A Leckie plays C Dillon.

Ladies pairs semi-final: A Magee and B Conlon (St John’s) beat C Ogle and L Aiken (Holm Park); A Anderson and L Martin (Magherally) beat A Burrell and A Cannaway (Tullylish).

Junior singles semi-final for final night: S Jess (Dromore NS) v R Frazer (Glascar); A Johnston (1st Dromara) v D Moffett (Glascar).

This Saturday, March 6, the Stonebridge Nationals will be played off at Ballybrake Stadium Ballymoney. West Down will be represented in the singles by A Johnston (Dromore NS), DJ Wilson (Tullylish), D Scott (Garvaghy; the National Fours by I McBride (Annaclone Presbyterian); the Ladies Pairs by A Magee and B Conlon (St Johns); the Junior Singles by L McCracken and S McBride and the over 55s by N McCauley and T Grey (Tullylish).

These games all begin at 11am so, if you can, come along and support the players.
