Pupils head bang their way to UK schools’ Rock Challenge win

Hazelwood Integrated College celebrated winning the UK title of the Rock Challenge at the finals of the competition in England.

The challenge, billed as Europe’s most popular youth culture event, is held around the world and is aimed at giving young people the chance to perform on stage encouraging them to do their best in a drug and alcohol free environment.

As well as winning the UK title the school swept the boards winning nine awards in total to progress to the grand finals next year.

Kathryn Sheppard, director of Rock Challenge at Hazelwood said: “This is an absolute dream come true for the students, staff and parents.

“They deserve this title for their passion, commitment and dedication over the past eight months. I am incredibly proud to be in charge of such a wonderful team.”

The team has practised for nine months, sacrificing weekends and holidays to perfect its routine

Principal Kathleen Gormley added: “The students and staff have brought great credit to the college as well as to Northern Ireland. To come first in the UK is an outstanding achievement.
