The DUP representative was commenting following publication of the latest jobless statistics in his constituency.

Mr Wilson said: “The latest unemployment figures for East Antrim are startling and enforce just how disastrous Covid-19 has been for our economy.

“Indeed, the number of people claiming unemployment benefit has shot up by over 900 since the crisis began. In the 16-64 age range, unemployment has risen from 2.9% to 4.1% in East Antrim.

“These disturbing yet not unsurprising figures demonstrate why it is essential that government continue to support the economy and why active steps should be taken as quickly as possible to restore normal economic activity before businesses are forced to close permanently and go into administration.”

A phased five-stage plan for slowly moving out of lockdown has been published by the Northern Ireland Executive.

Alongside the resumption of construction and manufacturing operations, Mr Wilson said the partial relaxation announced this week was an encouraging first step.

He added: “However, there must be scope for allowing other retail to commence trading as swiftly and safely as possible.
“Allowing people to move about more freely and engage in leisure activities will in turn increase the footfall which businesses need to be sustainable in the months ahead.

“There is always a balance to be struck between the public health and the economic health of society. However, in the long run, higher unemployment will permanently scar livelihoods and communities.

“We must do all that we can to ensure our economy bounces back and jobs are protected.”
