£0.5m extension proposed for Whiteabbey Primary School
Whiteabbey Primary School is in the running for a new £0.5m three-classroom extension.
A planning application has been lodged with Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council for a single storey extension to the rear of the school at Old Manse Road.
The school, which was established in 1839 at Shore Road, celebrated 80 years at its present location last year.
Whiteabbey Primary has more than 400 children enrolled.
Principal Keith Wysner said that it was built to accommodate 200 children.
Mr Wysner commented: “We are very happy that the building extension has got to this stage. It has been a long time running.
“It is three good-sized classrooms fit for the modern age with appropriate storage and technology.
“Half our school is in the main building which was built for 200 children. We are trying to reduce the number of mobiles.
“The school is regularly over-subscribed which is indicative of the quality of teaching children receive here.”
The principal indicated that building work may start after Easter with completion by September 2021 potentially.
