Newtownabbey Borough Council was to introduce revolutionary new wheelie bins for household refuse collections in March 1981.

The council’s development, health and technical services committee agreed that the trial should go ahead in Glengormley, Carnmoney, Ballyduff and New Mossley.

Councillor Jim Rooney said that the introduction of such a system would be “a memorial” to the present council.

“I believe this would be the one thing we will be remembered for,” he said.

Wheeled bins were not in operation anywhere else in the United Kingdom.

It was estimated that introduction of the new bins would mean an annual saving for the council of £200,000.
