A number of young people in the Carnmoney area were planning to introduce a neighbourhood watch scheme in February 1988.
The initiative was due to be introduced in the Fairview area, with plans to start it in other areas if it was successful.
The young people were involved in Newtownabbey’s Divisional Youth Office, Senior Members’ Development Course. This was run by the local Education and Library Board.
They hoped to launch the programme as part of their course project.
The theme of the project was ‘youth and the community’ and the young people felt that starting a neighbourhood watch fitted the requirements perfectly.
They met with local police officers to discuss their plans.
