SOUTH Antrim MLA Danny Kinahan has praised the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) for its swift response to a river pollution incident near Doagh last month.
Local anglers reported a substantial quantity of oil in the Sixmilewater on Friday, March 23 and NIEA officials were called out to deal with the incident. There were no reports of any fish being killed as a result of the pollution.
“I feel that I must pass on congratulations to the NIEA who responded quickly to the incident in Doagh recently. It is great when an agency can see the benefits of working collaboratively with the fishing community - long may this very good relationship continue,” Mr Kinahan commented.
“The various fishing groups with whom I meet regularly are a great example of how to organise and lobby to support a cause. They are committed to their sport and keen to encourage wide participation. I continually push at Stormont for the various agencies - Rivers, NIEA, and NI Water - to join up their thinking and I think we are beginning to see results,” the UUP man added.
