Arsonists target derelict flats

North Belfast MLA Paula Bradley has condemned those responsible for an overnight arson attack at a derelict block of flats at Old Irish Highway, Rathcoole on September 8/9.

“Those responsible for setting this building on fire have shown total disregard for the safety of local residents in the area. Their actions are totally reckless and could have resulted in fire spreading to nearby residential properties,” the DUP representative said.

Ms Bradley and her party colleagues Nigel Dodds MP and Alderman Thomas Hogg have been lobbying the Housing Executive for some time to have the site transformed to provide new-build social housing for the area.

They have now written to Clanmil Housing Association, which has been attempting to acquire the site from its owners, requesting an urgent meeting to discuss whether or not any progress has been made on the issue.
