Beach clean-up event called off

THE Marks & Spencer (M&S) and Marine Conservation Society (MCS) Big Beach Clean-up, which was due to take place along the shore at Hazelbank Park on Friday, May 11 has been called off.

Organisers of the event took the decision on Thursday, May 10 following an incident in Belfast Lough on Wednesday evening during which a woman fell from a ferry.

The woman was pulled from the water and taken to hospital. However, reports that she’d been holding a newborn baby when she fell into the water sparked a major search operation. Police later called off the search after inquiries revealed that a the woman hadn’t been holding a baby when she fell from the ship.

More than 150 people had registered to become beach cleaners for the day with the aim of stopping common items such as fishing nets, ropes and plastic bottles polluting our beaches and seas.

A spokesperson for M&S said the event will go ahead on a future date.
