Council backs Twelfth festival to tune of £5k

THIS year’s East Antrim Combine Twelfth of July celebrations have received a significant funding boost from Newtownabbey Borough Council.

The Orange Order’s annual Battle of the Boyne commemoration is scheduled to take place in Glengormley on Friday, July 12, and the local authority has already granted permission for Carnmoney District LOL No. 25 to host the event at the Valley Park.

The council’s Development Committee this week approved funding for the event under the Community Festivals Fund for 2013/14.

Members were informed that a “festival of fun for all the family” will take place in the Valley Park on July 12 from 12.30pm - 3.30pm to coincide with the annual Twelfth demonstration. Activities will include face painting, balloon modelling, glitter tattoos, Ulster Scots entertainers and live musical entertainment.

The committee approved funding of £5,000 for the festival, but that decision still has to be ratified by full council on January 28.
