Councillors have turned down a request for financial assistance from Drumadarragh and District Residents’ Association.
The group had asked the council for £250 towards the cost of hosting a meeting of Windwatch NI - a lobby group opposed to the erection of wind turbines in the countryside.
“The difficulty is that we could be funding a campaign group,” Alderman Fraser Agnew told the meeting.
Several members, including Alderman Paul Girvan and Cllr John Scott, expressed sympathy for the group and its stance against wind farms. But they agreed that the council shouldn’t approve the funding request.
Members stressed that the group could still apply for funding through the council’s community development grants process.
