Local councillors who secure seats on the new Antrim and Newtownabbey District Council will be paid a basic allowance of £14,200 per annum.

Members of Newtownabbey Borough Council currently get a basic allowance of £9,835 per annum.

A ‘shadow council’ will operate from after the election in May until the new super council comes into existence in April 2015.

Those who serve on the shadow council only will receive a basic allowance of £8,196, with councillors who also serve on the existing Newtownabbey Council getting paid up to £13,933.

At their Policy and Governance Committee meeting on Monday night (March 24), members agreed to ‘note’ a report on councillors’ allowances without debate.
