Condemnation after security alert in Glengormley

There has been condemnation after a suspicious object sparked a security alert in Glengormley at the weekend.

A section of the Antrim Road was closed between Glencairn Park and Ballyclare Road on Saturday evening (September 12), following the discovery of a suspicious object in the area.

The road was closed for several hours with police advising motorists to seek an alternative route.

Following the incident, Inspector Patton said: “At around 6.40pm, officers attended a report of a suspicious object in the area.

“ATO were tasked to the scene and the object was declared an elaborate hoax.”

SDLP Glengormley Cllr Noreen McClelland has branded those who left the hoax device as “totally reckless”.

Cllr McClelland added: “The people behind this have no concern for residents of the area. All they are doing is causing confusion, fear and disruption to the community.

“Actions like this, at a time when everyone is working together to get children back to school, businesses reopened and dealing with the impact of Covid-l9, is not only mindless but sinister.

“I would ask if anyone has any information that they contact the PSNI.”
