Council staff remove dumped PPE in Newtownabbey

Staff from Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council will be increasing patrols at fly-tipping hot-spots in a bid to alleviate the problem.

The move was announced after staff from the local authority were tasked to the Knockagh Road area of the borough to clear discarded PPE.

A concerned resident contacted the Times to highlight the issue.

The man, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “I have spotted at least five bags containing face masks, face visors, rubber gloves and used medical cleaning aids.

“The last fresh bag was dumped on Monday (September 7) between 3pm and 4pm.”

Commenting on the incident, a council spokesperson said: “We received a report of material dumped in this area and council staff have visited the site and removed it.

“Where there are hot-spot areas for fly-tipping, officers will increase patrols accordingly in those localities.”
