LEVELS of household debt within the borough are continuing to spiral out of control, according to figures released by Newtownabbey Citizens Advice Bureau.
The CAB’s latest statistics reveal that more and more local people are now seeking help dealing with debt, including unpaid credit and store card bills, mortgage arrears and crippling personal loan repayments.
Figures contained in the Bureau’s Annual Report reveal that during 2010/11, Newtownabbey CAB dealt with £7million worth of client debt. But during the past financial year (2011/12), Money Advice staff at the Dunanney Centre office were working with 193 new debt clients with a combined debt of around £11.9million.
“Many clients have been so badly affected by debt that family relations have broken down or their health has deteriorated,” said CAB District Manager Pat Hutchinson.
